Understanding Clinical School views on embedding environmental sustainability in research practices.
Meet Milly Bond, the Future Leaders Project Assistant working with the School of Clinical Medicine. She is working to understand attitudes towards environmental sustainability in research across the School of Clinical Medicine, identifying opportunities and barriers to embedding more sustainable practices. Milly graduates this year with a BSc in Biological Sciences from Imperial College London.
The School of Clinical Medicine is one of the six schools in the University of Cambridge. A large amount of resource-intensive clinical, computational, and laboratory-based research is undertaken across the Departments and Units of the School. A priority for the School is undertaking actions to decrease the substantial environmental impacts of its research. We recognise that the attitudes and behaviour of staff and students are central to effective action to improve sustainability.
The primary output for the Project Assistant will be a report describing the data collected on attitudes to environmentally sustainable research in the Clinical School, plus insights into the opportunities and barriers to staff and students who want to increase the sustainability of their research.
The information will be used in the future to identify areas of behaviour change to focus on, plus interventions that the School could make to support structural, cultural, and behaviour change. It will also represent a key resource to refer to when working at School level towards satisfying funders’ upcoming sustainability requirements (e.g. UKRI, Wellcome, Cancer Research UK, NIHR).
