Designing a new postgraduate course for tackling the interconnected challenges of climate change.
Meet Theodore Radvanyi, the Future Leaders Project Assistant working on the Sustainable Education project. Theo is an educator and academic researcher in the history and practice of democracy. He recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History and previously attended King's College London for his undergraduate degree.
Theo will help Cambridge Zero and Dr Ewa Marek (Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology) to design and propose components for a proposed new postgraduate programme (MPhil, PhD) at the University of Cambridge.
By considering transdisciplinary approaches to climate challenges and solutions, this proposed new programme could enable future generations of graduates to bring creative and research-informed approaches to tackling the interconnected and intersectional challenges associated with climate change around the world.
This project will identify examples from other universities and research within Cambridge that could inspire the design, teaching, assessment, and intended learning outcomes of this proposed new course. The successful candidate will carry out qualitative data collection with staff and students, both at Cambridge and elsewhere, and conduct research into how transdisciplinary degree design may be incorporated into a 9-month/11-month/4-year postgraduate programme.
The project will consider the international market for similar courses, seeking data on student numbers and course details as part of desk-based research that will contribute to the eventual business case for this course.
Outputs include an internally focused written report on findings and recommendations; verbal presentations to key stakeholders within the teaching ecosystem of the University of Cambridge and to parties interested in the Future Leaders Programme; and delivery of a thought leadership written piece/blog/short film for an external audience.
