Cambridge Zero: supporting and facilitating climate and sustainability education within the University of Cambridge’s formal undergraduate and taught postgraduate curriculum

Working with academic Schools

Projects undertaken in the 2023-24 year included supporting the School of Biological Sciences Natural Sciences Tripos review. We particularly focused on key skills and how this could deliver climate and sustainability competencies and were also available to support content and intended learning outcome discussions.

Cambridge Zero’s Education Team is interested in enabling cross-School discussion around the potential for climate and sustainability learning and teaching.

Working with academic Departments

The new Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Tripos has been supported by Cambridge Zero since the summer of 2023, facilitating the embedding of climate and sustainability content through and maintaining ongoing liaison with key staff.

Cambridge Zero’s Education Team is available to meet with Departmental representatives and individual researchers or lecturers at any stage of the year. This could involve Heads of Departments, Tripos leads, Directors of Undergraduate or Postgraduate Education or others interested in discussing opportunities for teaching and learning within their context.

Students as Partners

Cambridge Zero advocates for the work of Cambridge Centre for Teaching and Learning (CCTL) around inclusive teaching, the use of innovative pedagogies, and developing learner agency and wider stakeholder involvement through the students as partners concept.

Cambridge Zero facilitated the Cambridge Climate Society to deliver a students as partners-informed project across seven academic Departments and undergraduate degrees during the 2023-24 academic year. Find out more about the CCS Climate Education Project here.

This concept is a useful way to involve learners at the heart of curriculum development projects. The CCS Education Project 2023-24 was an innovative collaboration to enhance climate and sustainability themes and learning opportunities.
